The Dunes Hotel - A Thursday Throwback

Photo Credit : Bari Demers - The Dunes Hotel - 1986

Happy Thursday Vegas Lovers!  Here's an awesome throwback - The Dunes Hotel.

Who remembers the Dunes Hotel ?   I didn't know it at the time, (when I took this picture) but it has a remarkable colourful historical past.

The Dunes Hotel opened its doors on May 23, 1955 financed by Al Gottesman and the questionable Mafia controlled Teamsters Union, through the use of its Teamsters Pension Fund.

Can you imagine Al Gottesman purchased the original property from a rancher for only $58,000?

Like Vegas today, a grand opening was indeed the start of the Dunes.
A huge fanfare opening, (referred to as the "Magic Carpet Review"), featuring Hollywood star Vera-Ellen, along with 60 decorated dancers, set the stage for future celebrations in Las Vegas.

As the biggest resort of its time, famous celebrities performed and stayed at the Dune Hotel. Celebrities like Rita Hayworth and Dick Haymes, Dean Martin, Jayne Mansfield, Liberace, George Burns and of course, Frank Sinatra.

The marketing slogan was "The Miracle in the Desert" featured a 35 ft tall fibreglass Arabic King known as a sultan, 18 hole golf course, 90 ft rooftop pool with an elite health spa.

Apparently, the business side of the Dunes was shady, due to the Chicago Mafia evolvement, famous for skimming.  But, back then, that was pretty much Vegas. Throughout its existence, the Dunes Hotel had serious financial problems, with even The Sands lending a hand.  Famous lawyer, Morris A. Shenker bought interest stake, but it was soon learned, he too had connections with labor leader Jimmy Hoffa and the Teamster funding in the late 1960's.

Eventually Howard Hugh's made an offer to buy The Dune Hotel, but after his other investments, he bowed out.

Photo Credit :  Bari Demers 1986

In 1983, it was purchased by Stuart and Clifford Perlman, founders of Caesars World, for $185 million. By November 17, 1992 the Dunes Hotel sold for the last time by Steve Wynn for only $75 million.  A bargain for Mr. Steve Wynn and quite a drop from the previous buy of  $185 million in 1983.

Within a year, the Mirage Resorts, Inc, closed its doors and demolition of the 32 year old hotel began on October 27, 1993.  Another grand ceremony with fireworks and even cannon blasts from HMS Britannia of Treasure Island (T.I. Resort and Casino).  Unfortunately the colourful neon sign was destroyed. In hind·sight, it would have been nice if they kept that piece of history.

In its place is the now gracious Bellagio, Las Vegas.

As a typical tourist I took this photo in 1986, never realizing at the time, it's colourful history.  At the time we stayed at The Maxim Hotel, Las Vegas.  If you notice by my photo below, you can see the prices for New York Steak and Prime Rib.

Photo Credit: Bari Demers  - The Maxim Hotel and Casino 1986

A low price of only $4.95 !

A chicken dish went for $3.95 and after 2:00 am, Steak and Eggs for a awesome price of only $2.99. Talk about great prices back then.  Not at all like today, where a buffet or single dinner will cost you between $15.99 - $41.99.

All I can say to that, " Those were the days!"

Today, in place of the Maxim Hotel and Casino, Las Vegas, is the Westin Las Vegas Hotel, Casino & Spa.

Share your great memories, your recent photos or fun times in Las Vegas with us too.  After all, we are all tourists, just like you!

Why I enjoy MyVegas App

My Las Vegas article this week is all about, 'Why I enjoy MyVegas App'.

So - What's so impressive about MyVegas

MyVegas is an app by Play Studios, that allows you to collect loyalty points for FREE rewards.  I like to refer the loyalty points as 'Gold Coins'.  The more gold coins you collect, the hundreds of REAL REWARDS to choose from.

MyVegas has two apps, 'MyVegas Blackjack' and 'MyVegas Slots'.

Originally MGM properties teamed up with Play Studios, founded by CEO President Andrew Pascal (who use to work for Wynn Resorts) and Chief Operating Officer Paul Mathews.  Since then, Andrew's team and partners has grown substantially to an oasis of rewards. MGM is still a big partner, showcasing all their properties, but it doesn't stop there.

The partners are growing at a steady rate, sure to be of great value to us Vegas Lovers.

Sure, there are other Vegas apps, but I have yet to see one so well organized as MyVegas.  Play Studios has done an excellent job attracting tourists to Vegas by collecting some awesome rewards.

The Partners :

All the MGM Properties (Mirage, Aria Resort, Vdara, Mandalay Bay, Bellagio Las Vegas, New York, New York, Las Vegas, MGM Resort, Excalibur, Luxor and Monte Carlo, Las Vegas).

Including, Station Casinos, such as : Red Rock Resort, Green Valley Ranch Resort and Palace Station.

Circus Circus, Las Vegas Wolf Gang Pucks Restaurants, Las Vegas Mono-rail, Cirque du Soleil, Royal Caribbean International, Golden Strike (MGM) and so many more.

I'm loving to see that Maverick Helicopters has just partnered up to. The partners list is growing and growing with awesome rewards, you can all get for FREE.

Example of Rewards:

Resort Buffets for Two or Buffets for One with breakfast, lunch or dinner.

An assortment of entertainment from Cirque du Soleil to Chris Angel, Believe, including the Shark Reef Aquarium at Mandalay Bay, Las Vegas and the list goes on.

Free room options from 1- 3 nights

A fine selection of restaurants offering meals from appetizers to main courses.

Maverick Helicopters tours through MyVegas Blackjack.

As a matter of fact MyVegas Blackjack, also showcases a bunch of new partners, such as :  Allegiant Airlines, The House of Blues, The Smith Center and Hexx Kitchen and Bar, Las Vegas.

Seriously, the list goes on!

It's a no-brainer to play for free and collect your rewards before you leave for Las Vegas.

The only limitation in collecting your rewards?

Each person is only allowed to use 3 rewards during their stay in Vegas.  So, my wife and I collect three each, giving a grand total of 6 rewards.  We use a good portion for buffets and entertainment, plus my wife likes to use one as a casino credit.  So, it's important you play separately and each person register at the Vegas Resort you plan to stay at.

Once you book your flight and room to Vegas, that's the time to get your REWARDS.  Once you're settled in your Vegas Resort, head down to the MLife Players Club.

Here you get confirmation of your rewards.

Now, depending who you talk to, I have found that you can verify all the rewards at once, during your stay at the Vegas Resort. The reason I'm saying this, is because our first visit to MyLife Players Club counter at Aria Resort and Casino, the girl told us we were only able to cash one at a time.  The next day, the girl serving us, said that was NOT the case at all.  The second server was nice, professional and not at all like the first server.

So, you see, like anything, it depends on the service you get.

Seriously, all we want is to enjoy our stay and keep far away from the politics and any bad service.  In general, we DO receive excellent service from the countless professional staff, bartenders, maids, restaurant servers, chefs, front desk servers, outside greeters to chauffeurs.

Talking about service

Actually, on my first day to Aria Resort and Casino, Las Vegas, I had a fine chat with the friendly bartender at the Lobby Bar, while I waited for my wife to spend her time at the penny slots.  It wasn't busy, (a nice summer day) and I was curious to try their in-stock signature beer, Cabaletta – ARIA’s own craft beer.    ( Check out the Taste of Aria too.)

The beer was delicious!

The bartender served ( sorry, I forgot his name ) the Cabaletta in a tall frosty glass, prefect for the summer day.  The pilsner beer was refreshing and light.

It wasn't long before I just had to have two!

What made my experience more pleasing was the courtesy bartender, wondering how I enjoyed my drink and the small talk about where I'm from, including his experiences in Vegas.  He spent that extra time to make my stay enjoyable.  He didn't have to.  Most bartenders serve and go off doing something else.  Usually, bartenders I meet, quickly get your drink and they're gone.  Some have even snapped at me.  So, you see, I was impressed by his professionalism.  I felt comfortable and at home, talking about my beloved Seattle Seahawks or whatever.  It didn't matter the topic, he seemed interested.

And that's the key. Making your guest feel at home.

Anyway, off topic a little.  The MyVegas App by Play Studios is sure a winner, and next time your in Vegas, enjoy these awesome free rewards.

Of course, we all hope to see you in the casino, yelling," Winner!  Winner! Chicken Dinner! " The next time you win big in Vegas, let us know at Vegas Reviews

The Elegance of the Bellagio, Las Vegas

Photo Credit : Bari Demers - The Fountains of Bellagio

Driving up to the Bellagio, Las Vegas, it would be hard not to recognize the
Fountains of Bellagio.  I like to refer it to as the "Lake of Romance" for the countless couples mesmerized by the fountains spell.

It's also a FUN show for the whole family starting on schedule, as said by Bellagio website

8:00 p.m. - 12:00 a.m.

Our Experience

Coming through the main entrance lobby, your eyes are immediately glued to the chandelier boasting a colorful boutique arrangement seemly dancing across the 18 foot ceiling.  It's a step into elegance, showcasing it's artistic glass sculpture called "Fiori di Como" sculptured by Dale Chihuly.

Photo Credit : Bari Demers - The Fiori di Como at The Bellagio, Las Vegas

Your arrival is greeted by, what I like to call a  "Guest Services Specialist", who really do care about your stay.  I felt like I was getting that special VIP treatment.  The seamless check-in host gave us a FREE upgrade to a deluxe room on the 27th floor overlooking the glorious Fountains of Bellagio.

Seriously.

I really did feel like a "Hollywood Star" stepping into our room.  You know you made the right choice when everything you see takes your breathe away from the adore of luxury.
The next morning, we woke up well-rested in our lavish King-size bed made for any Queen or King.

Breakfast was next on our list, so we decided  to try out Café Bellagio.  I love how you get to stroll through the Conservatory & Botanical Gardens in order to get to Café Bellagio; such a beautiful setting.  Watching the humming effect of what you could be referred to as a "fine-running-machine", the hostess to your server gave that immediate attention.  In little time at all, the long line of guests were looked after in minutes, seated with a fresh coffee to start your day.

And the food - AWESOME!

Great tasting portions ready to suite any hungry guest. And trust me - I love my food!  If it's good I'm impressed, but when the whole experience is simply wonderful, I'm ecstatic !

Seriously.

Service now-a-days is the hardest thing to find.  It's indeed a pleasure when your whole body relaxes from the fine-tuned friendly service.  And thank you so much for the hard working Chefs giving us the most delicious meals.

Thank you!  Thank you!

Are you looking for the most relaxing vacation ever?  I highly recommend the Bellagio, Las Vegas.  It may be more pricey than other hotels on the strip, but the luxury is well well worth it!

Vegas Dreams and Having Fun on a Budget

Vegas View with Highroller - Photo Credit: Tianndra Demers

How to make a million dollars in Vegas ?

That's what I call the Vegas Dream.

I'm thinking the only way that will happen, is either, win a poker tournament or max out winnings with a slot machine.  It happens - for real.

Hold on !

I hear there's another way to bring in hard-cold-cash.

It's called market advertising on your website. I know, I know...the possibility of that ever happening is like winning the Power Ball Lottery, itself.

But wait...

According to a young lad from Ireland, he has lucked out in generating a million in revenue from his travel website called OneStep4ward, in just three years of blogging.

I was amazed, to say the least, so, of course I had to ask him, " How did you do it?"

He told me the same generic answer his website already says," @vegasreviewsvg quality content mate - never stop producing it, eventually it'll take off :)"

Well, that's good advise, right ?  Sounds promising.  But, how do you make a million?

Luxor Las Vegas - Photo Credit: Tianndra Demers

With any blog you have to have keen interest in the subject, experience it, be honest, and forward useful information to your million of viewers.

Wait...did you say a million viewers?

Ok, so my little blog, Vegas Reviews has maybe 10,000 unique viewers per month and, I have never received any funds from Ad Clicks.

So, would you say, my Vegas Reviews Blog gives quality content ?

I believe it does.

Let's see: Vegas has always been my dream vacation spot, "Home-away-from-home" for the past 35 years.  I have lost count throughout the years, but I average 2-3 times a year vacationing in Vegas.

Experience - check.

How about quality content?

I think so.

Let's see : I share honest quality information from a tourists point-of-view (POV).  As a real tourist, I share with you my mishaps, mistakes, the real cost of traveling to Vegas, the good resorts to check in to, great eateries for foodies (like myself) best entertainment, fun rides, events, things to avoid, gambling hazards and awesome tours.

Did I miss anything?

I'm your average joe, but call me Bari, who's considered a Vegas Lover

So, have I covered everything?

MGM Grand, Las Vegas  Photo Credit: Tianndra Demers

Oh wait.

Everyone that has gone to Vegas figures they are an expert of some sort or another.  But not everyone has quality information or are completely truthful.  In fact, they are trying to sell you something.  Sure, Vegas can be broken down to five different EXPERT categories, such as:

  1. Dining or Foodie
  2. Entertainment
  3. Accommodations
  4. Clubs (honestly, I'm not good in this area - the Club scene. I still can't understand how someone is willing to pay VIP Bottle service, when it starts at $1500 a pop - yikes!)  I hear it's great for bachelors or bachelorettes parties.
  5. And Tour experts - there's a lot of them!

White Castle - Las Vegas Strip  Photo Credit: Tianndra Demers

My Vegas Blog is everything the average tourist wants to hear.

We all want to enjoy our holidays without going home broke. I concentrate on the cost and FUN throughout Vegas as a tourist, with a budget, like yourself.

Like you, I count my pennies and keep close to a strict budget.  Those little extras can add up, like the Resort Fees and add-on taxes.  Trust me when I say, your room only costing $35, is just the beginning.  Your total of the day is more likely to be $80 - $200 per night, not including flight, meals, car rental, taxi or buses, tours and entertainment.

Vegas Strip Photo Credit : Tianndra Demers

But wait!

The more you SPEND at the casino, the more comps (complimentary bonuses) you receive. Well, actually you spent more at the casino to get that comp, so really, you have spent a lot more than expected.

Of course, you do have the option of playing MYVEGAS games, and with so many loyalty points you get FREE rooms, buffets, dinners, shows and gambling credits.  This option is free to play, and as long as you don't buy coins, it's a sweet bonus to your stay in Vegas.  So, yes, you can get 6 FREE COMPS per couple, per stay.

As far as winning millions or marketing opportunities with your blog, it's like cashing in on a lottery.

Will it happen?

No, but it sure would be nice.  I'll let you know when that happens.  Imagine blogging, what you love to do and making a living doing so.

Nice - right ?

Ok.  So I'll stop dreaming and continue on giving my viewers the best knowledge of having FUN in Vegas on a budget.  Clicking on my google ads and buying something will help, but in reality, it's a far stretch to the truth.  Donations is another way to help out in my efforts, and I truly appreciate your kindness, if you do so.

Generally speaking though, I wouldn't be spending all my time and effort, if I didn't enjoy it.

Seriously, I really LOVE VEGAS

In the end, that's what counts, and I hope you can come along for the journey with my journals, blogs and photos of FUN IN VEGAS.

See You in Vegas!

About Vegas Reviews

Aria Resort and Casino - Photo Credit : Bari Demers

Vegas Reviews was created by a Canadian couple who started going to Las Vegas since the 1980's.

With the Vegas scene rapidly changing on a monthly basis, husband and wife team, Bari and Patricia found it necessary to share their experiences with new travelers, to ensure a wonderful overall experience for newcomers into Vegas.  It's also a hub for Vegas Lovers, coming back 2 - 3 times a year.

After the first resort, the El Rancho Vegas being built on April 3, 1941, Las Vegas has become the fastest growing city then any other city in the world, generating billions of dollars with over 40 million visitors per year. With so many tourists, newcomers may become overwhelmed by the hustle and bustle of Sin City, not sure where or who to turn to.

Vegas Reviews is here to help.

Vegas Reviews not only entertains the unique group of Vegas Lovers, we also make it easier for newcomers, answering crucial questions, not effecting their pocketbook. Unlike paid columns or magazines, who promote certain corporate resorts for the almighty dollar, Bari and Patricia are tourists, like yourself.  We don't have a money-making agenda to promote Vegas hotels or businesses.  That said, supporting our efforts by checking out the Google links or by donation will help our fun-based Vegas Blog.

Poolside Room at Aria, Las Vegas   Photo Credit: Bari Demers

The ivegasreviews blog is totally different from other travel sites, as it focuses on the fun and less on the negative aspect, featuring years of experiences in Las Vegas, from tours, resorts, events, entertainment to the best restaurants.

Bari is a writer, screenwriter and creator of the ivegasreviews blog, the Facebook, http://www.facebook.com/Vegasplayfun and Twitter @vegasrviewsvg featuring 1000's of photos and Vegas tips, ensured to make your next trip more enjoyable. In fact, the ivegasreviews blog concentrates on helping others enjoy a Vegas vacation without going home broke and disappointed.  In the early 1980's, our first experience was a quick reminder of exactly that.

Since our very first stay with the Maxim hotel, Las Vegas, we have had the opportunity to enjoy MGM properties, such as the Bellagio, the Aria Resort and Casino, Excalibur, Luxor, the Mirage and Monte Carlo.  We also enjoyed the comfort of the Venetian and Palazzo, Las Vegas, including excellent restaurants, like the Grand Lux Cafe and Delmonico. Numerous other stays have been with Caesars Palace, along with some of the best entertainment at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace, seeing celebrities such as Cher.  We have also adventured three different  times with Treasure Island T.I. Hotel and Casino.

http://ivegasreviews.blogspot.ca/2015/01/planes-trains-and-automobiles.html
M Resort, Las Vegas

Funny, our most memorable place was the Aladdin, which so happen to have ties to the mafia in the 1960's, including a Japanese businessman, Ginji Yasuda in 1987.  Apparently, when we arrived in 1993, the hotel had changed hands to successful businessman,  Joe Burt, who was unfortunately killed in a motorcycle accident that same year.  On November 25 1997, Aladdin closed its doors and was imploded. In its place today is the Caesars Palace properties, Planet Hollywood Resort.

Treasure Island T.I. Las Vegas   Photo Credit : Bari Demers

Neighboring properties, such as the Wynn and Encore, will be on our next spotlight of resort luxury, entertainment and restaurants. Mind you, we have tried out their Buffet and found it a tasteful gourmet delight. And, throughout the Wynn we have enjoyed favorable courtesy professional staff while enjoying their casinos and restaurants. The Wynn or Encore is defiantly on our cross-hairs, sort of speak.  We relish the thought of complete luxury at the Wynn Las Vegas and Encore Resort.  Until then, please enjoy my time and effort, showcasing tips, great restaurants, wonderful memorable tours (like the Maverick Helicopter Tours) and entertainment.

If, by chance, the resort we visit, isn't a memorable fun filled experience, we simply won't write about it.  You're sure to find enough critical reviews on Tripadvisor.

In conclusion, I trust you will find valuable information and fun facts to ensure a successful vacation while in Las Vegas. And last, but not least, we have met so many great friends across the world.

Star Trek Convention in Vegas - Top 20 Prime Directives

Star Trek Convention Top Prime Directives

This year my daughter and son-in-law will be going to the Star Trek Convention 2015 at the Rio Suites Hotel, Las Vegas.  It was my task to prepare a Top 20 Prime Directive, to ensure their safety among other Aliens.

My daughter, son-in-law and granddaughter enjoying the Star Trek Convention in Las Vegas

1. Seek out new life and new civilizations, while in the Las Vegas Universe.

2. Non-interference is the Prime Directive.  Mingle is an important cover-up. After all, you ARE an 'Alien'.

3. Always keep your phaser on stun, just in case.

4. Remember, humans are highly illogical and may want to sell you something you don't need. Ask Quark for advice, but be careful, he too may want to sell you something.

5. While heading to Vegas, use Warp Drive. If you don't know how, just ask Scotty.

6. If in danger, use the VULCAN DEATH GRIPIt's sure to get you out in a pinch.

7. Let Captain Kirk know, "Having is not so pleasing then Wanting", therefore you want William Shatner's autograph. If he fails to comply, tell him Captain Jean-Luc Picard said it's imperative and," Make it so!" (I hear they're close friends, get both autographs. One for your dad too.)

8. Caution if you see any signs of frightened Tribbles, it's means a Klingon is near by.  Remember, phaser on stun!  But if you happen to run into Worf, he's on our side, and will help you out.

9. Your enemies may be invisible, they may be using a cloaking device. Take caution!  If necessary, ENGAGE and use that Vulcan death grip.

The Star Trek Series main Bridge

10. Don't wear a RED SHIRT - it's sure to lead you into trouble, according to Deanna Troi.  By the way, she also tells me, if you happen to bump into a Gorn- RUN! ( Gorn are Lizard beasts that will rip your head off) * See above photo that I took while fighting a Gorn during one of my visits to Vegas.

11. Mingle softly and follow this ancient advice," When in Rome, Do as the Romans Do".  In other words, party-like-hell in Sin City. (This is according to Lieutenant Commander Worf * - Federation Ambassador to Qo'noS; previously, strategic operations officer, Deep Space Nine and first officer, U.S.S. Defiant, and a hell-of-a-drinker, sure to drink anyone under the table.)

12. When going out into the Vegas Universe, "Boldly Go Where No Man or Woman has Gone Before - seek out Q for extra currency, but be careful not to ask for his advice!  He just may trap you into the 'Q Continuum'.

13. It's secretly known Vegas is caught in a TIME WARP, the days and nights seem to last forever, so go out and party hard, using logic if you can.

14. If logical fails while in Vegas, buy a powerful drink called,"Warp Core Breech" at Quarks Bar.  Most likely found at the Rio Las Vegas - ask for it by name.

15. If, by chance the bartender has NO IDEA what you are talking about, lead him to this ingenious website: Quarks Bar & Restaurant actual Drink Recipes.

 Star Trek Convention 2016 - 50 years

16. If, by chance, the above drinks don't send you into Warp Drive, quickly seek out Mr. Spock, he'll help you in a pinch.

17. While exploring Alien Planet Hollywood Resort or Rio Las Vegas, check for a group of Officers wearing Gold or Blue Uniforms.  They're easy to find due to the fact, they don't know how to mingle.

 Star Trek Convention

18. If you happen to see Jeri Ryan at the Alien Colony called,'Rio Las Vegas' ( Seven of Nine) send her this message for your Dad," My Dad wants your autograph and picture!"  If she fails to comply, resort to blowing your cover and say,"Resistance is futile...we are the BORG."

19. By chance, if you bump into Lt. Sulu (George Takei), take a 'Selfie Picture' with him.  (I hear it was very popular in the 21st century).

20. If you get lost, seek out Vegas Reviews FUN Facebook Page  or Vegas Reviews
AND (most importantly) Live Long and Prosper in Vegas Warp Time.

Kids in Vegas

https://about.me/vegasreviews
Aria Resort and Casino, Las Vegas - Poolside   Photo Credit Bari Demers

What do you think of kids in Vegas ?

You know what I'm talking about.  Young parents or parents in their 30's need some quality time with their kids, BUT, they also want to enjoy the Vegas Lifestyle too.

In recent years, Vegas has accommodated kids between the ages of 5 to 16 years old, taking on the Big Apple Coaster and Arcades at New York New York, Las Vegas or at the Adventure Dome at Circus Circus.  Excalibur and Mandalay Bay also entertains the younger crowd, from the exciting Tournament of Kings to the Shark Reef and how about a view of Vegas with the Highroller.

https://about.me/vegasreviews

Stratosphere, Las Vegas offers thrill seekers the choice rides, such as the  Insanity, X-Scream, Big Shot and the exhilarating Sky Jump.  The only thing here, there's a limit to age groups height and weight. Accordingly, you must be 48 inches tall to ride.

Same with Circus, Circus, Las Vegas:

*AdventureDome Cost:
$6 - $12 per ride or roller coaster. All-day passes to the Adventuredome are $31.95 for adults and $17.95 for children 33-47 inches tall (free for toddlers under 33 inches with a paying adult). Locals receive a $2 discount with proof of a valid Nevada ID (Monday - Friday).

Overall though, there's plenty for kids to do in Vegas.

Myself, I have never taken my kids to Vegas, just because in our younger days, Vegas was strictly a play land  for adults.

Be things have changed.

Some say Vegas isn't a place for kids, while others will argue differently.  Each have their own opinions, while Vegas seems to accommodate both.

The only thing I find distasteful is when you see someone pushing a stroller of babies at 1:00 am, still enjoying the nightlife.  My question is, " Shouldn't  those babies be snuggled in bed by 8:00 pm?"

As a whole, Vegas offers the whole family an opportunity to enjoy their next vacation in Sin City.  After all, Vegas is about having FUN, no matter what age you are.

So kids, get some quality time with Mom and Dad, while in Vegas!

Best Room in Vegas - What's Your Criteria ?

Aria Resort and Casino, Las Vegas - 16th Floor - poolside view -  Photo by Bari Demers

Some folks say,"I don't care what my room looks like in Vegas. I spend very little time in my room".

I must agree to disagree with this comment.

My vegas room is an important part of our overall fun experience.  From room service to being pampered with ensuite amenities.

Here's my "Lucky 7" criteria I hope for when picking a room :

1.  The view - it's always a plus to be able to see either a beautiful view of the Vegas Strip or the amazing courtyard, poolside.
Poolside View at Aria Resort and Casino - Photo by Bari Demers

2. Above or equal to the 10th floor - we've experienced all kinds of rooms throughout the years, from 2nd floor to the 28th floor.  The most enjoyable rooms are those above the 10th floor. It's feels like an upgrade of luxury.

Rooms from the second to the fifth floor aren't really anything special. These rooms make you feel the resort hasn't made that "extra effort" to make you feel comfortable.  Mind you, some customers feel safe on the lower floors.

By the sixth floor, you begin to see more of a view.

And of course, this doesn't apply to the $40,000 per night stays at the Octavius Tower Caesars Palace featuring 11,200 sq. ft.

But seriously, who can afford these rooms?  Billionaires - that's who!

Caesars Palace, Las Vegas - Poolside View - 27th floor Forum Towers - Photo by Bari Demers

3. The Bedding - Plush King-Size beds with Egyptian cotton sheets with fluffy pillows.  A good nights sleep is always a plus, even in Vegas, where it's non-stop 24/7.  Sure, you may stay up until the wee hours, but you will always feel like heaven as your head hits that pillow. A comfortable bed is certainly a requirement with any resort.

4. The size of the room means something - when I stayed at the Venetian, Las Vegas, 650 sq ft rooms does make a difference.  Most comparable one room suites throughout Vegas are from around 420 - 520 sq ft.  Without paying more, it's always nice to feel like you have been upgraded.

5. The amenities are important.  Showcasing my Facebook Page Vegas Reviews means it's vital I have Internet connection.

a) Internet - It's also the best way to contact family and friends while on vacation.

b) The in-room safe is a must, no matter where you decide your next vacation.

c) Electronic Toys - Remote control is always a plus, from TV to opening your drapes automatically. When I stayed at Aria Resort and Casino, their touch iPad feature offered everything from temperature control, lights, drapes, TV to setting the alarm.
Just entering the room was amazing, as the two-fold drapes automatically opened to the grand view.

d) Room Service - from the much appreciated, hard working maids cleaning your room, to a hot meal greeted by kitchen staff.  It really means a lot - it's like the "icing on the cake" sort of speak. What kind of holiday would it be without the friendly staff. Be sure to leave a tip to those who go that extra mile for you.

6. The Bathroom - the most pleasing bathroom is a little luxury on the side.

During our stay at Caesars Palace, the Forum Tower Royal suites offered 2000 sq ft, one bedroom with 3 bathrooms, a private bar, huge dining and living room featuring plenty of space to entertain guests up to six people.

Each bathroom featured a dual-head rain shower with glass doors, marble tile and towels galore.

My wife even had her own make-up table, just off from the main master bathroom.

Bathrooms are not only a requirement but it's a place to soak your bones or take a much needed shower. All those little soaps, conditioners and shampoos with their very own scent, make your time most relaxing.  My wife loves to take those traditional bubble-baths.

7. Entrance - entering your room does have value.  It's nice to step into your very own foyer.  Opening the door is your "grand entrance" to luxury.  For that split second, your mind anticipates,
"What will my little piece of heaven look like? "  At the Forum Tower suite, our entrance was magnificent, with double-door entrance, a doorbell and a large marble floor foyer.

Your room experience may be different depending on your lifestyle.

But one thing I've noticed?

Once you move up to different levels of luxury, it's hard to go back to a "Plain-Jane" room.

Las Vegas offers you every kind of luxury you're looking for.

What do you look for in a room?

What do you consider your Best Room in Vegas?

Personally, mine would begin with the Venetian, Las Vegas along with Palazzo, the Wynn side-by-side with Encore, Caesars Palace with the Forum and Augustus Towers, the Bellagio, Vdara and Aria Resort and Cosmopolitan with the terrace option.

Your personal resort favorite may be different from past experiences, but the above suggestions won't steer you wrong.

Your best room may have been at the Luxor or Planet Hollywood - whatever is your best, share with me your favorite room in Las Vegas -  Vegas Reviews - We are Vegas Lovers.

Whatever life-style requirements you have, they are sure to be important to you.

Your stay in Vegas is important, it's your vacation to relax and enjoy the comforts you don't regularly see at home.  It may be to celebrate a wedding, anniversary or birthday.

But whatever the reason is, you've decided to stay in Las Vegas, the room begins or ends your pleasant stay.

See you in Vegas!

What NOT to do in Vegas

Vegas Reviews (also known as Vegas Play and Fun ) began on Facebook, in 2009, to help newcomers become familiar with the Las Vegas Lifestyle and NOT leave Sin City disappointed.

And I will tell you why?

TRUE STORY

In 1980, our first traveling experience to Vegas, was the most interesting.

Back then, we stayed at the Maxim Hotel and Casino, (the property today is The Westin Las Vegas Hotel, Casino & Spa).

Our plane landed at the McCarran Airport sometime in the middle of August.

Collecting our luggage, we were whisked outside to the summer's hot Nevada desert.  Not realizing at the time, transfers to the hotels were suppose to be planned before you arrive.  Unfamiliar with our surroundings, we figure it would be safe to take a taxi. Hopped in and gave our destination,"The Maxim, please."

We were excited!

You could see the Vegas Strip from the airport, it was glorious, to say the least. I said to my wife,"Won't be long, and we'll be in our hotel in no time!"

Well, that wasn't the case at all.

Our driver decided to take us on a scenic tour, arriving 45 minutes later. I still remember to this day those shocking words by our taxi driver," That will be $100."

My mouth must of dropped to the floor, I said,"Excuse me, but HOW MUCH???"

Once again, he looked at me with his hand out," $100"

Say what?

I asked him if this was the shortest route to our hotel.

He wasn't going to take any guff from us and repeated," Listen. Do you have a problem hearing, I said the fare is $100."

I grumbled.

Taking out our hard earned cash, I asked him to give us a hand with the luggage. He told me he's way too busy, another customer was waiting.  Needless to say I was up-set with this mans service.  He popped the trunk. I barely removed the rest of my luggage and his tires were smoking out of there.

Yup, the trunk was still open.  And seriously, the tires were smoking!

Coughing up the smoke I remember ranting at my wife," I'm going to phone that company and give my what-fore."

I actually said a lot worse, but you get the idea.

My wife told me not to worry about it, after all, it's our vacation.  Let's make the best of it.

So we did.

[Apparently, this kind of Taxi Service is called," LONG-HAULING".  It's actually illegal !]*

Today, I arrange my transfers to and from the hotel before I leave.  I haven't used a taxi service since.

THE MAXIM

Heading into the Maxim hotel, we were greeted with the longest line-up I have ever experienced in our lives (including today).  It would make Disneyland lines look like a walk-in-the-park.  You could tell the girl at the front desk already had a long day.  She was short tempered and proceeded to bark instructions at us.

We just looked at her with our WIDE-EYES, figuring everyone in Vegas was like that.

All we wanted was to get to our room, that was it.  Our travel from Montana, to Vegas was over eight hours, with a stop over in Salt Lake City.  A  waiting period of 3 hours until we finally ended up in Las Vegas.

Back then, we didn't have a straight flight, like you can today.

After two long hours of checking in, our room on the 4th floor looked ok.  But then again, we never had anything to compare it to.

Opening the dusty drapes by hand, our view in the distance was the original MGM Grand Hotel.  The MGM Grand Hotel wasn't straight across from Maxim, but it was easy enough to see, just by pressing the side of your face against the window.

I would imagine Sammy Davis Jr. would be on the top penthouse of the MGM.  Not sure if he was or wasn't.  All I remember back then, there were a bunch of billboards signs showcasing Sammy Davis Jr.

THE FIRE

We arrived in August, just months before the MGM Grand Hotel was involved a deadly fire, killing 85 and injuring 785 in the worst disaster in Nevada history.*

The hotel was sold in 1985 to Bally Entertainment Corporation for $594 million.*

MEGA RESORT HOTELS BEGINS IT LEGACY IN LAS VEGAS

In the early 1980's, mega hotels hadn't even been built yet.

The MGM Grand was the biggest hotel in the world at that time with over 2000 rooms.

It wasn't until Mr Steve Wynn decided to build The Mirage in the mid 1980's, did Vegas take off into a wild construction frenzy, building Mega Resorts worth hundreds of millions (today it's billions) of borrowed cash.

Mr Wynn's legacy, The Mirage Resort and Casino, was indeed very impressive. It featured 3000 rooms, an active volcano out front, a tropical paradise inside and eventually showcasing entertainment of white tigers by Siegfried and Roy by 1990.

Vegas Resorts today are luxurious and are designed to pamper their guests.  The bigger pockets you have, the more lavish your experiences can be.  There's no limit to the possibilities.

THE CASINO

We were so exhausted the night before, our first night was sleeping.

It wasn't until the next morning our eyes opened to the clanging sound of cold hard cash dropping into, what seemed, like an endless bucket of slot machines.  Bells were going off, announcements were being heard and guests were racing over to the cashier with their little buckets filled to-the-brim of either pennies, dimes, nickels or quarters.

We were in Heaven - the glorious Casino!

Well, that's what we though.  It was rumored people were making tons of money in Vegas.

Well, OK.

That's what our travel agent said.  And we could now see for ourselves, it was true!  After all, Grandma's were lining up with two to three small pails of cold hard cash.

It had to be true, right?

We dove into the casino, grabbing the nearest slot machine, dropping quarters like madmen.  After hours upon hours of loosing our cash, we realized by the end of the day, we had spent our "cash fund" in just one day!

Both us decided to grab something to eat. The all night restaurant was just a hop, skip and jump from our machine. After midnight the restaurant was serving steak and eggs for only $2.99. That was a full 7 oz steak, two eggs, a pile high of hash-browns and your choice of toast.

What a deal!

Oh wait a minute.  We just spent all day and night spending our only cash. So, maybe it wasn't such a good deal after all.   After our early breakfast, it was now 2:30 am.  Our ears overheard the table behind us talking about, how the establishments filled the rooms with pure oxygen, so you would feel WIDE-AWAKE.

So, that's why we weren't tired.

At least, that's what we thought at the time.  You know - Green horns!

Suddenly our slot machine we labored throughout the day, started making a lot of noise. Bells and Whistles were going off, attracting a crowd.  We quickly learned this guy placed in the Max (three quarters - TRIPLE SEVEN) and won the JACKPOT!

Oh NO!

Not our machine, it just can't be!  We painfully watched, as the man in the suit collected his winnings.  And I might add, grinning from ear to ear. It  was strange to me, he was carrying a briefcase.  Never did figure that one out.  Why was he in the Casino carrying a briefcase?

Devastated, we headed back to our room, realizing we had to come up with some kind of plan.  Our stay was for another four nights, which started from the Sunday to Thursday.  My wife mentioned there were these cool credit card machines.  All you had to do was check-in with the cashier to get more credit.

Now, that was a BIG mistake.

To make a long story short, we ended up spending more money, leaving Vegas with a hefty credit card bill.

THE KEY

To add insult to injury, I lost our safety deposit key. Of course, I headed to the front desk to see if they could open it. They said," Sure. All we have to do is get a locksmith to drill the safe for us. But the cost would be around $250 plus the damage to the safe.

Yikes!

It was then I remembered, it could have possibly been lost at the pool.  Back then, the pool closed around 4:30pm to make sure everyone was back inside, spending money at the Casino.  I remember pleading with the front desk to have someone open the pool, so I may have a good look.  She frowned, then pointed at this largest security man, I have ever seen. He must of been 300 lbs, 6'- 5" and strong as an ox.  He could have easily picked me up, shook me like a rag doll, with ease.

But...

It turns out, he was the nicest man on the planet. He not only let me into the pool area, he helped me find my keys!  The key in question must of fell out of my pocket, through the plastic lawn chairs into the unexpected grate, laying below in a small pool of water.

I was soooo relieved!

That one trip to the pool saved me over $400.   I couldn't thank him enough, so I gave him a $20 bill.

I learned earlier that day, while suntanning at the pool, MAKE VERY SURE you give a better tip then $0.50 cents.  The pool bartender quickly educated me on my tipping practices.

Today, it's common to give your barmaid or bartender $2 -$5 tip, depending how the service is.  Mind you, when the cash is low, I pass a dollar each time I'm visited with a drink.

IN CONCLUSION

My above story tells how frightening things can turn out in Vegas, if you aren't prepared.  Las Vegas and its establishments are constantly changing things around, so you have to be well aware of your surroundings. It's important to know when it's time to stop gambling or in some cases, not at all.

Make your trip in Vegas a FUN event by planning ahead and reading about some helpful tips.  Be sure to check out the Las Vegas City website for more helpful hints and don't be afraid to ask for assistance from the hotel you're staying at.

Most are more than eager to accommodate your wishes.

And don't worry, the Resorts will catch you poolside, charging alcoholic drinks as much as $20 per tumbler.  Mind you, in today's Vegas you have FREE options, even if you aren't a big spender or whale.  For example, if you play MyVegas Slots or MyVegas Blackjack app games, you can receive free rewards for buffets, entertainment and up-grades on rooms.

And, if you are a professional gambler, you already know about the extra comps waiting for you in Vegas, from free flights, entertainment, meals, rooms and transportation.

For the rest of us?

We rely on the gracious Vegas resorts with their low offers, free up-grades meals and entertainment.

But first you must get there.

I hope my story gives you an insight of what can go wrong and how to avoid it in the first place.  I'm just another tourist, like you, who loves going to Vegas.
